As you may know, the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education (MEXT) sponsors a number of different scholarships for non-Japanese people to study in Japan.  There is a Research Scholarship which is open to those who already hold a BA (or MA but not a PhD) and would like to conduct academic research in Japan. In some cases, it may be possible to extend the term of the scholarship to complete a Master’s or Doctoral degree, while some people use the research time to work on projects (in Japan) related to degree programs in the US.

 As the Japanese government would like to provide encouragement and support for former JETs, starting a few years ago, a number of these Research Scholarships are annually set aside for JET Alumni.  

 If you are interested in applying, please note that applications are now available and the deadline for JET Alumni living in New England is Tuesday, June 30.  (The non-JET deadline is June 19). 

 The scholarship will begin in April or October 2010 and continue through March 2012.  

Those without excellent Japanese language skills are generally assigned to begin the scholarship with 6 months of Japanese language training at a university.
