Individuals who are attracted to making a notable difference in people’s lives around the world would really enjoy this role.

Job Summary

We are looking for a person to be based in Japan to administer and help manage a series of English language camps for the summer of 2014. You will be responsible for overseeing a team of 7-8 American university students who will be teaching Japanese high school students, both boys and girls, to practice and become more comfortable with spoken English. Camps generally have a low student:teacher ratio of 10:1 or less to allow for meaningful interactions. Teachers will conduct seminars on topics of their choosing, lead communication classes and participate in panel discussions. As part of this role you will be a substitute teacher in case any of the 8 teachers is unable to teach on a given day.

There will be 1-2 camps each week for up to a seven-week period from late July to the end of August. Most camps will be overnight camps lasting 3 days and 2 nights each. During overnight camps you will live at the camp facility. You may also spend part of your time living with a Japanese family and will have the opportunity to explore your various locations as your camps will be held in at least 2 and possible more prefectures. At least one camp will be at the base of Mount Fuji and you will have a day off to be able to hike the mountain if you so choose. Another day will offer you the opportunity to tour a private Buddhist garden retreat. The position starts in mid-July with initial training in the Boston area before traveling to Japan and concludes on August 31 when you return from Japan.

The Japan Summer Camp Administrator is responsible for the overall delivery activities of this Program and will be the senior on-site administrator. This position will report to a manager based in the United States.

Responsibilities

·         Manage a team of 7-8 teachers, provide them with feedback and ensure that they are working well both with students and with each other

·         Substitute teach as needed including:

o        Developing 2-3 seminars of your choosing to conduct for the participants

o        Implementing the ESL Curriculum developed and provided by the program

o        Leading discussions in a relaxed setting daily

o        Supervise activities within the classroom

·         Any other tasks necessary for the successful operation of the Program

Qualifications

·         High level of energy

·         Excellent interpersonal and good organizational skills

·         Highly reliable and able to work independently after initial training

·         Knowledge of current popular American culture

·         Interest in education and international culture are important

·         Speak, read and write English at a native level

·         Over 18 and having completed at least 3 years of university education. A university degree and especially an advanced degree are highly desirable

·         Possess a passport valid until at least March 2014 and be able to travel to Japan

·         Teaching experience and the ability to speak some Japanese are bonuses, but not requirements

In addition to your flights, while in Japan the program will provide you with transportation, medical insurance, food and accommodation. A small stipend is also available.
