We did it!

The GlobalGiving Japan Matching funds have been exhausted!! JET alums, participants and friends all over the world have raised over $24,000which will be matched and become over $48,000 for the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund and recovery efforts in Tohoku. WOW!  And news of our campaign reached as far as the US Embassy Tokyo!

A most sincere THANK YOU to all who contributed to JETs Rally for Tohoku!

JETAA USA is supporting the Taylor Anderson Memorial Foundation for a donation drive that starts when the clock strikes midnight in Japan on March 11. And GlobalGiving has offered to match these donations until the $100,000 matching limit runs out! Previously the matching was for a 24 hour period, but GlobalGiving has agreed to extend the matching period after the JET community successfully raised $20,000 in one day!

This is a great opportunity to show our ongoing support for Tohoku by going to the Global Giving website to make a donation.

Online donation drive Donation website: www.globalgiving.org/fundraisers/jets-rally-for-tohoku Starts: 12:00 midnight Japan time on 3/11 (11 a.m. EST on March 10; 8 a.m. PST, etc.) Ends: matching continues until the funds run out

Background

Three years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and the devastation in Tohoku has largely faded from the news. However, so much remains to be done for the survivors and TAMF has been partnering with a number of organizations in Japan to provide relief and help the people of Tohoku build a strong and vibrant future.

Details: All donations up to $1,000 per individual donor made to the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund on March 11th Japan time will be matched by Global Giving through their Japan Match Global Giving program. (Global Giving will charge a 15% facilitation fee to cover their costs, which donors may choose to cover if they wish so that their full donation amount goes to TAMF.)

Please see the Terms & Conditions Page. There is up to $100,000 total available in matching funds for this campaign, up to $25,000 matching per project, and up to $1,000 matching per individual donation.

Children of the Tsunami Screening

The Tufts JCC has been very active in raising funds and awareness of the aftermath of 3.11.

The Tufts JCC will be screening Children of the Tsunami, a 2012 BBC documentary. Tewassa will also be on hand to talk about our work and attendees will have a chance to decorate a square for our next quilt.

Directed by Dan Reed 2012 | 60 mins | Documentary
On March 11th 2011 Japan was hit by the greatest tsunami in a thousand years. Through compelling testimony from 7-10 year-old survivors, this film reveals how the deadly wave and the Fukushima nuclear accident have changed children’s lives forever. The story unfolds at two key locations: a primary school where 74 children were killed by the tsunami; and a school close to the Fukushima nuclear plant, attended by children evacuated from the nuclear exclusion zone.
